This Lion Head pattern dates from 1877. It was made by Gillander & Sons, Philadelphia. This lid with thumb prints will fit a 5 1/2" opening which I believe is the butter dish on a short stem. The overall diameter is 6 1/8" and 3 3/4" high. This lid is pictured in Reily & Jenks "Early American Pattern Glass" page 300 on the appropriate base. The original base must have broken early in its life as there are no dings that I see or feel where it fits into the base. There is a short fill on one of the "tear drops" on the edge at the back of the lions head. I can not see any marks or fracture signs thru a 10 power loupe, please see the pictures.
All of my items are used and will show some signs of our ancestor’s normal use. This is not damage like a chip or a crack. If use marks, in my opinion, are unusually noticeable I will comment on it.
