This opalescent hobnail pattern is “Spur Hobnail” by Findlay Flint Glass Co. from the 1890’s. This is the cover or lid for the butter which is pictured on page 28 of Bredehofts and Sanford’s booklet “Findlay Flint Glass Co.” It is the clear opalescent version. It is 6 5/8” in diameter with a set back to fit into the bottom and 4.5” high. There 2 flakes on the inside edge of the retaining ring and a couple of flea bites in the same area. These are from the normal use of the butter. I do not see or feel any dings etc on the finial, to the hobs or on the outside edge of the cover.
All of my items are used and will show some signs of our ancestor’s normal use. This is not damage like a chip or a crack. If use marks, in my opinion, are unusually noticeable I will comment on it.
