This little nut dish was made in Japan, probably in the early part of the 20th century. While it is not marked I have ahd several that were. All in the same shape with a multitude of differen designs. While you can often find these listed as open salts, they aren't although they do make a great addition to an open salt collection. These are the individual bowls that were found at each place setting on a dinner table or at each position at a card table. There is a larger master nut bowl that can be found in this shape as well and it shares many of the same patters and the individual bowls do.
This little bowl measures just 1 3/8 inches tall and is about 2 3/4" across the top. The physical condition is excellent. There are no chips, cracks or nicks. The applied gold enameling is abut 90 - 95 per cent intact. The heavy enamel at the top edge and the band of intricate decorative detailing is wxceptional. There's even a tiny line of morriage on the interior of the top of the piece. The lower line of gold shows some wear and is worn on each of the raised rib areas.
