Paragon made amazingly delicate porcelain, thin enough to see your fingers through when you hold pieces to the light. These are two pieces from a condiment set, which may originally have included a tray and another shaker. I have a single shaker and a toothpick holder. They make an attractive pair.
The design is of crane seated on a branch between large rose colored blossoms and a river bank. On the back side is a stem of flowers that would never grow together in real life; in fact, some of these flowers probably don't exist in real life since the little blue flowers at the top have horizontal purple and yellow stripes. An art nouveau style border around the top shoulder has two different floral designs painted above it. The open topped toothpick holder is 2" tall, and the shaker is about half an inch taller with a single hole in the top. Both pieces are 8-sided, four sides longer and shorter corner panels. There is a cork in the base opening. The toothpick holder is marked on the base Paragon Fine Bone China, Make in England. Condition of both pieces is excellent, no chips, cracks, crazing except for light crazing on the bases, or wear to the paint.
The backstamp on the base of the toothpick holder is shown in photos and dates the pieces to 1929.
