This is a beautiful, and most unusual piece of Majolica. Shaped like the sort of bucket that would be lowered into a well to get water, it has a draped, decorated "tapestry" (think scarf) over one side. The inside of the pitcher is a vibrant turquoise. It has been described as a vase or a basket.
We are hosting a number of antique Majolica pieces from a large Baltimore collection. Some will include their past sales receipts and histories as noted by the antique dealers who sold them.
Dimensions: 8 1/2" tall (at the handles) or 4 1/4" tall (at the bucket rim) with a 5" opening.
Marks/Dates: c. 1880's. There is no manufacturer's mark. However, there is a plaque, "LaBrousse 12, Bd des Capucines, Grand-Hotel" on the bottom. Perhaps this was commissioned by a hotel in Paris?
Condition: There are no cracks, chips or other damage. There is a small dimple on the rim but it is under the glaze and part of the manufacturing process.
Most Victorian-era majolica have not survived their 100+ years without imperfections, including discoloration, crazing, small chips, and hairlines. We will note these to the best of our ability, but please ask for additional photos, if you are unclear on their condition.
