Made by several factories including New England Glass, Sandwich, Bryce Bros., Gillander and Ripley, this piece was made circa 1860-90's. It was made as a covered sugar bowl for a child's toy set but is also collected as a covered table salt. It is a very desirable piece, listed in Heacock and Johnson's 5000 Open Salts at a value of $85 to $95 with the cover. It is sometimes seen without the cover listed as an open salt. This example is in very good condition, one 1/4" chip on the rim of the lid, slight chipping at one other point on the rim of the lid, no other condition issues, not even flea bites. The glass is bright and clear. It measures 5 1/4" tall, 3" wide at the top of the bowl.
