Ischia La Parla Del Golfo
I have been unable to determine a date of design, or who the artist might have been for this exceptional little four inch cabinet plate. However, I did purchase this at an estate sale along with other vintage Italian ceramics. The workmanship or detailing of the painting are lovely and the artist gave great attention to detail; at least in my opinion.
Perhaps the artist was a local Ischian who sold his wares to tourists visiting the Islands of Naples?
The hand painted scene depicts Castello Aragonese - Castle Aragon - which was built in 474 BC by Jerome of Syracuse. In 1438 Alfonso of Aragon had a bridge built to connect the Castle to Ischia. Through historical events of the ages the Castle passed through many hands and had various uses; today it is private property.
There are no holes for hanging on the underside, so I'm assuming this is considered to be a small cabinet plate. The only flaw I detect is a small glaze chip on the underside that measures about 1/8" of an inch and is not noticeable when displayed.
This little ceramic cabinet plate will be a lovely addition to your ceramics collection.
